Ivan was in one of the first years to benefit from Lonsdale’s twin site status.
Ivan outside the Co-Op on the High Street on Eccleshall's Victorian Market with Mr Peat holding a Start right Shoe Box from his mums shoe shop..... The Co-op has now moved onto Stafford Street and his mum has gone back to teaching.
This was Ivan's first run in with large animals (at Eccleshall car boot sale) Click here to see the latest. Ivan then moved to Walton Middle School, Stone and from there onto Alleynes High School. During this time Ivan had been a member of Eccleshall Beavers and then Croxton Cub Scouts. From here he moved to Aston and Little Stoke Scout Group with his move to Stone to be Educated. At Alleynes Ivan took History, Information Technology, Art and Geography as his options in addition to the core subjects of English Literature, English Language, Mathematics, Religious Education and Science in which he took a higher paper to achieve the double award status. It was also within this period when Ivan took up Archery initially as a secondary sport to swimming which he had participated in since around the age of four. However through the training and guidance given him at Audco Archers based at Lillishall National Sports Centre in 1995 Ivan was a member of the team, which won the international shoot that year. After his GCSE’s Ivan moved to Newcastle-under-Lyme College to study Advanced GNVQ Leisure and Tourism, whilst working as a lifeguard and swimming teacher for North Shropshire District Councils Leisure Services. Though Ivan was mainly based at Market Drayton Swimming Centre he did also work in the authorities other two pools at Wem and Whitchurch. Still a keen scouter in 1997 Ivan obtained the scouting leadership awards. In 1998 it was a move down south to the University of Portsmouth where Ivan studied his BSc (Hons) in Leisure Resource Management. This being the very first year that the Labour Government introduced Tuition fees and the student loan system. This course was in three sections. The first Property Studies involved things such as Sustainable Development, Marina and Leisure Centre Design, Town and Country Planning… The second segment of the course was Law. Though this covered the majority of legal areas these were focused on how they would apply in the business world. Elements of this section included Property Law, Commercial Property Law, Employment Law and Contract Law etc. The final section was Business Studies and involved units in Finance, Psychology, Human Resource Management etc. Ivan’s Dissertation for this course was entitled: “The Shropshire Hills; A future National Park?”. This looked at the importance of preserving our countryside and the different levels on importance and protection different countries give such areas and how this is reflected within their legal frameworks. It was the legal section of this course that interested Ivan the most and so he went on from Portsmouth to read Law at Keele University for his postgraduate course. This was the normal mix of criminal and civil law. As with many of his fellow students it was the criminal portion that grabbed his interest. This can be seen partially by his selection of dissertation topic: “An Englishman’s home is his castle?; An analysis of the development of a persons right to protect themselves, their property and others.” In addition to looking at the current situation in English law and where this had developed from this piece also looked at the differences between this and different systems around the world including American state law (looking at and comparing selected states), France, Italy, Canada and Australia. The second part of this work looked at comparisons with and between Roman and other ancient legal systems such as that of ancient Sparta, Athens and the other Greek city states. After completion of this course Ivan decided to take a year out to get some practical experience and opted for a year with the Crown Prosecution Service. The reasoning partially being how this part of his course had intrigued him and partially as he had already done a weeks work experience with his uncle’s civil practice and so wished to have a comparison. It was at the end of this 12 month period that Ivan was selected as the conservative candidate for Eccleshall ward and then elected to Stafford Borough Council.
