The Conservative Party in Brief

The Conservative Party is a large and complex organisation, representing and involving people with a diverse range of backgrounds, interests and concerns.  It is a broad church, which encourages open debate and accepts differences of opinion.

What unites the Party are the core Conservative principals which provide our foundation.

Freedom
Conservatives believe in less interference from the State - freedom for individuals, families, voluntary groups and businesses.

Enterprise
Conservative want to keep taxes low and set businesses free from red tape to help Britain compete in the global economy.

Responsibility
Conservatives stand for the rule of law and support for all members of our society.  We recognise our duty to protect the environment for future generations.

Nation
Conservatives want to safeguard the Union of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, maintain strong defence and uphold our right to national self-government.  We want to be in Europe but not run by Europe.

Eccleshall Conservative Way Forward

Eccleshall Conservative Way Forward is a subgroup of Eccleshall Conservative Future, membership is not automatic but free to members of Eccleshall Conservative Future (please note subscription fee is payable to receive your own copies of the magazines from the central Conservative Way Forward office).

Conservative Way Forward was founded in 1991 to defend and build upon the achievements of the Conservative Party under Margaret Thatcher’s leadership, and to adapt the principles of her era in government to modern concerns and challenges.

Conservative Way Forward's Principles:

Nationhood

Each nation must be free to determine its policies to the benefit of its citizens.

Freedom

For responsible individuals, guaranteed by the rule of law administered by and independent judiciary and minimal state activity.

Democracy

The exercise of political power, with the consent of the people - through regular elections on the basis of universal suffrage and a secret ballot.

Security

The first duty of the state is to provide external and internal defence of the citizenry.

Community

Defined by geography, tradition, inheritance and sense of identity.

Capitalism

The most effective system of wealth creation. Free markets are blind to gener, race, class or religion.

Choice

For individuals must be maximised - even if the state accepts responsibility for provision of a safety net.

Enterprise

Fostered by a low tax, low inflation economy - with currency exchange rates determined by the free market.

Deregulation

Domestic and global - to maximise freedom of choice and individual responsibility in an improved society.

Visit to the House of Commons: 22nd May 2007 The initial event is going to be run in conjunction with The Eccleshall Branch of The Stone Conservative Association.  There is going to be a total of 30 seats available, which will go quickly once they open, to a visit to the House of Commons.  Priority will go to members of the Eccleshall Branch (Including members of Eccleshall and Stone Conservative Future).  However we have obtained ten tickets for new members/interested parties.  Further details will be available closer to the date.  Please contact Ivan for further details.  Please feel free to contact Eccleshall Branch Executive member Frank Hough for information, who along with Cllr Ivan Jennings will be running the event with support form chairman David Brass.

I have been on two previous visits both of which where extremely interesting.  The last one included drinks in the members room overlooking the Thames.  Then a quick talk by the then leader Ian Duncan-Smith and Bill Cash MP followed by a meal.  We then went to the gallery and watched part of the debate going on at the time.

This trip was also a great result.... for a brief overview of what occurred click here.

2009 European Elections - June

The European Parliament has 626 Members who are elected in the fifteen member states of the EU for a five-year term. There are 87 MEP's for the UK. Most of the time, Parliament and the MEP's are based in Brussels where its specialist committees meet to scrutinize proposals for new EU laws.

In addition to their growing role as legislators, MEP's approve the appointment of the European Commission, decide the EU budget with the member states, monitor spending, approve international agreements, question EU Commissioners and national Ministers, and appoint the European Ombudsman. Citizens have the right to petition the European Parliament.

The UK is divided into twelve European electoral regions. Each region has between three and eleven MEP's and each MEP in a region represents each person living there. If you live in Weymouth or Portland you live within the South West Region which is represented by seven South West MEP's those who are currently representing you are listed below you are able to contact any or all of them.
